Class Field Trip to the Georgia Nature Center on November 3, 2008

WELCOME TO WORTH COUNTY 

FOURTH AND FIFTH GRADE LIFE LAB

          SPRING FLING EXTRAVAGANZA       

Fourth and Fifth grade Life Lab students planned, organized and implemented a Spring Fling Extravaganza in the Sylvester Elementary School Gymnasium.  Life Lab Students planned and designed fun-filled games for third thru fifth grade students.  During the four day extravaganza  over 600 students visited and participated in the games during their specials period.  This was a complex project  involving much preparation, learning, thinking, evaluating, flexibility,  discipline, creativity,  leadership, and persistence from the Life Lab students who implemented it. 

  While engaging in this unit students:

bullet

developed economic concepts (supply/demand, Malthus Theory, consumer goods versus capital goods, etc. 

bullet

applied advertising techniques through working cooperatively in groups to create scripts for skits and flyers using Microsoft Word and Microsoft Publisher.  (The skits were performed and  flyers distributed by Life Lab students to all teachers and students at Sylvester Elementary School.)

bullet

applied math skills at a higher grade level through problem-solving that required Life Lab students to compute interest on long term longs, use mental math to compute tips when eating at a restaurant,  solve problems involving the the total cost of item/s after the discount, etc.

bullet

applied economic concepts through implementing the Spring Fling project and through the use of computer-assisted programming.

bullet

increased his/her autonomy and responsibility through planning, organizing, creating, implementing, and communicating a complex real-life four day project involving over 600 students at Sylvester Elementary.

bullet

experienced the value of flexibility, analysis, and prioritizing when working as a team to reach a consensus.

bullet

participated  successfully in a complex project that required cooperation and communication.

bullet

developed his/her ability to undertake projects that have uncertain outcomes.

bullet

developed work ethics and a sense of a job well done.

 

 CONVERTING THE SYLVESTER ELEMENTARY GYMNASIUM  INTO A FUN-FILLED ARCADE IN PREPARATION FOR THE SPRING FLING      EXTRAVAGANZA
