What is Oobleck ?

Oobleck was an exciting and engaging learning experience for all the student participants.   Students worked together to investigate an unknown substance using similar strategies that real-life scientists use when discovering the nature of an unknown substance such as a new strain of bacteria.   They used brainstorming and metaphorical thinking to describe the characteristics and properties of Oobleck,  using their computer skills to record  responses.   They applied creative thinking skills as they designed a spacecraft that would be able to land on an ocean of Oobleck.  Students were introduced to the periodic table and the structure of atoms.  They developed concepts of cohesion, surface tension, adhesion, viscosity, hydrogen bonding, etc.

Properties of Oobleck

Research Team:  ALLAN, PAUL, AND CHASE

¨  Oobleck is like a liquid in that it takes the shape of the pan.

¨  It liquifies in your hand when you release the pressure.

¨  Oobleck changes to a solid when you compress it.

¨  It looks like a liquid, but feels like a solid when you press on it.

¨  It has so much suction that when you pick Oobleck up, it lifts the pan with the oobleck in it.

¨  Light things don’t sink in Oobleck.

¨  Oobleck doesn’t leave any pnament imprints.

¨  Oobleck locks in air .

¨  Oobleck turns into powder when dried.

¨  Oobleck dissolves in water.

¨  It is not transparent.

¨  Certain things stay submerged because the Oobleck has pressure and suction.

¨  Oobleck sticks to objects.  It has adhesion.

¨  Oobleck also has cohesion because it has surface tension.

Students brainstorm the  characteristics of oobleck;  used word processing to list these characteristics;  designed a space craft to land on an ocean of oobleck, and wrote creative stories about oobleck.

Oobleck

Authors: Heather and Emily

“Class, today we will be working on an experiment called Oobleck!” said an excited Mrs. Youngblood.

“Mrs. Youngblood, What is oobleck?” asked a puzzled Chris.

“Just wait and see!” replied Mrs. Youngblood nicely.

Mean while Mrs. Youngblood was busy mixing the ingredients. After a while she turned around to check on the class. Everyone was buzzing with excitement! She covered the huge bowl then turned around and began to teach the class some complicated words and told them to write them down on some note cards. She returned to her desk and put the oobleck in zip-lock bags along with a bright pink note card and neon green one for notes. Then placed them on her desk; one for each student. She returned to the front of the room and placed the children in pairs, then covered the tables with outdated newspaper. She passed out the bags then told the students to notice the viscosity, the compression, cohesion, adhesion and surface tension and record your observations.

Instead of just feeling, observing, and smelling the oobleck, Chris…ATE IT!  All of a sudden he turned GREEN absolutely GREEN.

“OMIGOD!” shrieked Lily “Your shirt collar is messed up…. and you’re gr green!”

“LILY, GET A HOLD OF YOUR SELF!” shouted Mrs.Youngblood.

“Yes ma’am, but he ate the oobleck!” replied Lily in astonishment.

“It tastes like like…” he stopped for a brief moment to taste it again “..like rotten seaweed”

“We are not going for pizza tonight!” exclaimed a wide-eyed, jaw-dropped Lily.

Later that night Chris awoke to a high pitched sound. Some kind of force made him walk 12 whole miles to be picked up by a space ship and carried to Ooblekia where he will be taught how to live and play. This rare species is bred to be the same as their parents.  Maybe, in the future , we will be able to learn more about the rare species of Oobleck. One thing we know for sure is that only some people are born with the ability to become Oobleck.

Chris answered his own question “What is oobleck?”  Only now he knows how it tastes!

What happened to Lily? Well , she moved to Russia the very next day, and what happened to Mrs. Youngblood?  She is doing fine just fine.

THE TOUGH TITANIC SUB

AUTHORS:  BRISTOL AND KERI

The Touch Titanic Sub is a one-of-a-kind flyying submarine.  It was designed and created by Bristal and Keri to land on a mysterious and sticky planet that no other spaceship has been able to land on before-----Planet Oobleck.

The powerful pink sub is so powerfully pink that it can magically slice and navigate through the cohesive and adhesive Oobleck.   If it ever gets stuck, which I highly doubt will happen, this ship has the help of the trusty super scissors.  The submarine is high tech and equipped with everything a pink submarine needs: a high tech hatch, which is very handy for exiting the hutch; a parachute, which is designed and perfected to allow our sub to land smoothly on the thick, stick substance.  This sub has special, bright headlights that will enable The Oobleck Martian navigator to actually see clearly while she is slicing through the Oobleck like green butter.

Our Tough Titanic Sub has an  hydrogen tank because there is no way it could even go two feet without energy, say nothing about Planet Oobleck , which is light years and light years away.  In order to be transported to Planet Oobleck, one needs very powerful hydrogen energy .   Naturally, this Titanic Sub hydrogen tank has a refill entry, because, I mean, how else are you going to fill up the tank; knock a hole in it?

We are proud of our one-of-a-kind flying submarine.  We realize that The Tough Titantic Sub only gives us a small taste of what we will experience in the future.

 WOW!
